Butterfly Breathing

How to Do:

1. Setup:

  • The Helper sits in front of the Child in a comfortable and calm space.
  • Provide the Child with a butterfly finger or hand puppet (or scarf if preferred).
  • Add soft, calming music or nature sounds to enhance the sensory experience.

2. Practice Together:

  • The Helper and the Child simultaneously perform this breathing exercise, mirroring each other.

3. Activity Steps:

  • Step 1:
    – Place the butterfly puppet on the Child’s pointing finger of the right hand.
    – Inhale deeply, expanding the belly.
    – Exhale slowly, blowing into the hand to “lift the butterfly” into the air.
    – Raise the right hand as the butterfly “flies” and gently lands back on the Child’s lap.
    – Repeat this sequence 10 times.
  • Step 2:
    – Switch to the left hand.
    – Repeat this sequence 10 times.
  • Step 3:
    – Use both hands simultaneously.
    – Repeat this sequence 10 times.

4. Repetitions:

  • Perform 10 breathing sequences for each hand:
    – 10 times on the Right hand
    – 10 times on the Left hand
    – 10 times with Both hands together

Tips for Success:

  • Use gentle, descriptive language to make the activity imaginative and calming.
  • Encourage the Child to breathe slowly and deeply for maximum relaxation.
  • Adjust the repetitions or hand movements based on the Child’s comfort and engagement level.
