Sidewalk Chalk Play

How to Do:

1. Setup:

  • Choose a safe, outdoor area with a large sidewalk, paved surface, or chalkboard.
  • Provide large, colorful sidewalk chalk for easy grip and visibility.
  •  Ensure the Child is dressed for outdoor play and the weather is suitable.

2. Activity Steps:

  • Part 1: Imitation and Copying
    – The Helper starts by drawing shapes (e.g., circles, squares, triangles) or simple designs (e.g., sun, house, flower).
    – Encourage the Child to imitate or copy the shapes and designs using their chalk.
  • Part 2: Guided Drawing
    – The Helper suggests familiar designs for the Child to draw, such as:
    ◦ A smiley face.
    ◦ A rainbow.
    ◦ A tree or cloud.
    – Use different colors to make the drawings vibrant and fun.
  • Part 3: Free Drawing
    – Allow the Child to free draw using their imagination.
    – Encourage them to create their own designs, patterns, or stories.
    – The Helper can join in by drawing alongside the Child to inspire creativity.

Tips for Success:

  • Encourage the Child to use multiple colors to explore creativity.
  • Praise their efforts and creations to build confidence.
  • If the Child struggles with drawing, guide their hand gently or draw together.
  • After finishing, take photos of their artwork to celebrate their creativity!
