Eye Gaze Program

How to Do:

1. Setup:

  • Select a blank wall with muted or white color.
    • Tape a 2 ½ foot string horizontally at eye level for the Participant, ensuring they are seated or standing comfortably about 2 feet from the wall.
    • Attach multicolored masking tape pieces along the string in this sequence:
    – Red at each end
    – Green, Black, Purple in between
    – Blue in the center
    • Place a star, smiley face, or 1-inch marker at the midline of the string to serve as a central focus point.

2. Activity Levels:

Level 1: Introduction
• The Helper instructs the Participant to focus on the colored string.
• The Helper calls out 2-color sequences (e.g., “Red to Green”) while the Participant moves their gaze between the colors.
• A pointer may be used to visually assist and direct focus.
• Repeat the sequence 3 times, focusing on colors to the left of the center marker.
• Mastery: Move to Level 2 once the Participant achieves 100% accuracy.

Level 2: Expanding Focus
• Continue as in Level 1, but now include colors to the right of the center marker.
• Call out 2-color sequences, guiding the Participant to follow instructions.
• Repeat each sequence 3 times.
• Mastery: Proceed to Level 3 upon 100% accuracy.

Level 3: Advanced Focus
• The Helper expands the sequences to include multiple colors across the string (e.g., “Red to Purple to Blue”).
• The Participant follows instructions, maintaining focus and smooth eye movements.
• Repeat each sequence 3 times across the entire string.
• Note: Once Level 3 is mastered, incorporate additional oculomotor activities like “Eye Spy” with a flashlight for variety and reinforcement.

Level 4: Diagonal Tracking
• Reposition the string to a diagonal angle on the wall.
• Repeat the color sequences from Level 2 and Level 3, focusing on the new diagonal orientation.
• Guide the Participant to track colors smoothly along the diagonal.
• Repeat each sequence 3 times.

Tips for Success:

  • Use clear, calm instructions to guide the Participant.
  • Ensure the Participant maintains a comfortable distance from the wall.
  • Adjust the pace of instructions based on the Participant’s focus and response time.
  • If the Participant struggles, simplify sequences or reduce the number of repetitions before progressing.
