Chair Balloon Toss

How to Do:

1. Setup:

  • Position the chair in a safe, open area with the Participant seated comfortably.
  • Ensure the chair has back support and that the Participant’s feet are firmly touching the floor.
  • Inflate 4-6 colored balloons and prepare cards with matching colors (use colored construction paper or index cards).
  • Play classical music or calming background sounds.
  • Optionally, provide a small plastic lightweight racket for added variation.

2. Activity Steps:

  • Part 1: Basic Balloon Toss
    – The Helper tosses a balloon in the air in front of the Participant.
    – The Helper shows a color card matching the balloon.
    – The Participant taps or bats the balloon with their hand to keep it in the air, matching the color shown on the card.
    – Repeat with different colored balloons for 5-10 rounds.
  • Part 2: Increasing Complexity
    – The Helper upgrades the activity by showing 2-4 color cards in sequence.
    – The Participant taps the balloons in the order of the colors displayed.
    – Repeat the sequence for 3-5 trials, adjusting based on the Participant’s skill level.
  • Part 3: Optional Racket Use
    – Introduce the lightweight racket as an alternative to using hands.
    – The Participant bats the balloon using the racket, still matching the color sequence shown.

3. Repetitions:

  • Start with 5-10 rounds of single-color matching.
  • Progress to 3-5 trials of color sequences with increasing difficulty.

Tips for Success:

  • Adjust the height and speed of the balloon toss based on the Participant’s coordination level.
  • Use clear, encouraging instructions to guide the Participant.
  • If using a racket, ensure it is lightweight and easy to handle.
  • Keep the activity fun and engaging by celebrating successful matches.
