How to Do:
1. Setup:
- Ensure the participant is seated comfortably in a rocking chair large enough to support their head, neck, and full trunk.
- Place a weighted lap pad, blanket, or soft cover on their lap for added comfort and sensory input.
- Optionally, provide headphones and a music player with soft classical or nature sounds to create a calming environment.
2. Rocking Movement:
- Guide the participant to rock forward and back at a slow and steady pace.
- Emphasize gentle, rhythmic movements to promote relaxation and sensory regulation.
3. Engage with a Fidget Item:
- Place a fidget toy or squishy ball in the participant’s lap or hands.
- Encourage them to squeeze and squish the item during the rocking motion to enhance sensory engagement.
4. Optional Enhancements:
- Adjust the environment to the participant’s preferences, such as dimming lights or selecting soothing music.
- Allow the participant to set the pace of the rocking for comfort and autonomy.
Tips for Success:
- Ensure the chair is stable and safe for rocking.
- Monitor the participant’s comfort level and adjust as needed.
