Chair Yoga Moves

How to Do:

1. Setup:

  • Both the participant and helper (caregiver) should sit comfortably in their chairs, ensuring the chairs have a back for support.
  • Optionally, play calming music or nature sounds to create a relaxing atmosphere.

2. Yoga Pose Selection:

  • The participant picks a yoga card from the deck, which shows a different chair yoga pose.
  • The helper can demonstrate the pose first, ensuring that it is safe and comfortable for the senior.

3. Practice the Poses:

  • Perform 5 yoga poses, holding each pose for at least 10 seconds.
  • Repeat each pose 2 times, focusing on gentle movements and mindful breathing.
  • Encourage slow, controlled movements and remind the participant to “BREATHE SLOWLY IN AND OUT” throughout each pose.

4. Relaxation:

  • After completing the series of poses, take a few moments to relax and breathe deeply.
  • The participant can focus on how their body feels, promoting relaxation and stress relief.

Tips for Success:

  • Keep the movements slow and gentle, focusing on flexibility and relaxation rather than intensity.
  • Offer plenty of encouragement and ensure the senior feels supported during each pose.
  • Adjust poses as needed based on the participant’s comfort and range of motion.

  • 2 chairs with a back
  • Chair Yoga picture cards
  • Music
  • Nature sounds or sleep time music choice
