The helper should hold a bubble wand, feather, or pinwheel in their right hand, and place their left hand on their belly to demonstrate.
The participant should be seated comfortably, ready to follow along.
2. Demonstrate Belly Breathing:
The helper takes a deep breath in through their nose, allowing the belly to expand, and watches the hand on the belly move outward.
Slowly release the air, blowing the bubble (if using a bubble wand) or blowing air to make the pinwheel or feather move, and watch the hand on the belly move inward as the belly flattens.
The helper should say: “BREATHE IN, BELLY EXPANDS, BREATHE OUT, BELLY CONTRACTS” as they demonstrate.
3. Participant Practice:
The participant then takes a turn blowing bubbles, repeating the process 5 times in a row, followed by a short break.
If using a pinwheel or feather, the participant repeats the same steps, blowing gently to make the pinwheel spin or the feather float, and focusing on the movement of their belly.
4. Repetitions:
Perform 5 sets of 3 repetitions for each item (bubbles, pinwheel, and feather).
Encourage the participant to focus on their breath and the sensation of their belly expanding and contracting with each breath.
5. Relaxation:
After completing all repetitions, take a few moments to relax and focus on deep breathing, allowing the participant to notice how calm and centered they feel.
Tips for Success:
Encourage the participant to breathe slowly and deeply, focusing on the sensation of their belly moving with each breath.
If using bubbles, ensure the participant blows gently to avoid rushing the process.
Remind the participant to take their time and enjoy the calming effects of the activity.
