Eye Spy – Follow the Leader Games

How to Do:

1. Setup:

  • Choose a dimly lit room or adjust the lighting to enhance the visibility of the flashlight beam.
  • Provide 2 flashlights: one for the Helper and one for the Participant.
  • Ensure the room has various objects to “spy” and follow (e.g., furniture, toys, or wall space).

2. Eye Spy Steps:

  • Step 1: Introduce the Game
    – The Helper explains the rules:
    – Use the flashlight to find objects in the room based on clues.
    – Example: “Find something brown, like the ceiling fan.”
  • Step 2: Practice Searching
    – The Helper calls out 10 items, one at a time, for the Participant to find using the flashlight.
    – The Participant points the flashlight beam at the identified object.
  • Step 3: Repeat
    – After completing the first set of 10 items, repeat the process with a new set of 10 items or adjust based on the Participant’s interest.

3. Follow the Leader Steps:

  • Step 1: Introduce the Game
    – The Helper explains the rules:
    – Move the flashlight beam around the room or wall.
    – The Participant follows the beam with their flashlight, mimicking the Helper’s movements.
  • Step 2: Practice Together
    – The Helper slowly moves the flashlight beam to various points (e.g., on the wall, furniture, or objects like a teddy bear).
    – The Participant mirrors the movement with their flashlight.
  • Step 3: Increase Complexity
    – Gradually increase the speed or randomness of movements.
    – Introduce new challenges like zigzag patterns, circular motions, or sudden stops.

4. Repetitions:

  • Perform 2-3 rounds of Eye Spy and Follow the Leader, adjusting the number of items or movements based on the Participant’s engagement and skill level.

Tips for Success:

  • Use descriptive and encouraging language, such as “Great job finding the red truck!” or “You’re quick to follow the light!”
  • Adjust the difficulty level by:
    – Using simpler clues for younger participants.
    – Increasing the speed or complexity of movements for older participants.
  • Celebrate small successes to keep the Participant motivated and engaged.
