Beading

How to Do:

1. Setup:

  • Prepare a blank sheet of paper and use crayons or colored pencils to draw a simple beading pattern.
  • Scatter ¼ – ½ inch beads of solid colors across the table.
  • Provide a 12-18 inch cord for stringing the beads.

2. Activity Steps:

  • Step 1: Create the Pattern
    – The Helper draws a simple, colored pattern on the paper (e.g., red-blue-yellow-green).
    – Show the Participant the pattern and explain how to match the beads to recreate it.
  • Step 2: Scan and Match
    – Scatter the beads across the table, ensuring they are spread from left to right.
    – The Participant scans the table to find the beads that match the pattern.
    – Once found, the Participant strings the beads onto the cord in the correct sequence.
  • Step 3: Repeat and Build Complexity
    – Repeat the activity 2-3 times, gradually increasing the complexity of the pattern based on the Participant’s comfort and ability.

3. Repetitions:

  • Start with simple patterns (e.g., 3-4 beads) and increase to more complex ones (e.g., 6-8 beads) as the Participant gains confidence.

Tips for Success:

  • Use clear, encouraging language to guide the Participant. “Great job finding the red bead! Now what comes next?”
  • If the Participant struggles, gently point to the next bead in the pattern as a prompt.
  • Allow the Participant to choose colors for a new pattern to boost engagement.
