Prepare a blank sheet of paper and use crayons or colored pencils to draw a simple beading pattern.
Scatter ¼ – ½ inch beads of solid colors across the table.
Provide a 12-18 inch cord for stringing the beads.
2. Activity Steps:
Step 1: Create the Pattern
– The Helper draws a simple, colored pattern on the paper (e.g., red-blue-yellow-green).
– Show the Participant the pattern and explain how to match the beads to recreate it.
Step 2: Scan and Match
– Scatter the beads across the table, ensuring they are spread from left to right.
– The Participant scans the table to find the beads that match the pattern.
– Once found, the Participant strings the beads onto the cord in the correct sequence.
Step 3: Repeat and Build Complexity
– Repeat the activity 2-3 times, gradually increasing the complexity of the pattern based on the Participant’s comfort and ability.
3. Repetitions:
Start with simple patterns (e.g., 3-4 beads) and increase to more complex ones (e.g., 6-8 beads) as the Participant gains confidence.
Tips for Success:
Use clear, encouraging language to guide the Participant. “Great job finding the red bead! Now what comes next?”
If the Participant struggles, gently point to the next bead in the pattern as a prompt.
Allow the Participant to choose colors for a new pattern to boost engagement.
