The Helper and the Participant sit comfortably in a calm and quiet space.
Provide a breathing ball sphere for the Participant to hold.
Play calming music or nature sounds to enhance the sensory experience.
2. Demonstrate:
The Helper gently holds the breathing ball sphere in front of their belly, using both hands.
Hold one square on opposite sides of the sphere’s surface.
Take a deep breath in, expanding the belly as the ball inflates (ball expands outward).
Exhale slowly through the mouth, allowing the ball to deflate (contract inward).
Focus on the slow, steady release of air as the ball shrinks back.
3. Practice Together:
After demonstrating the breathing technique, the Helper and the Participant perform the exercise together.
The Participant mirrors the Helper, holding the ball in the same way.
Repeat the cycle of breathing in and out with the ball expanding and contracting.
Optionally, count aloud in a rhythm:
– In for 3, hold for 4, out for 5 (or adjust the count based on comfort).
4. Repetitions:
Perform the breathing sequence for 5-10 cycles, adjusting the number of repetitions based on the Participant’s comfort level.
Tips for Success:
Encourage the Participant to focus on the breath and the movement of the ball.
Breathe in slowly and deeply, perhaps holding for a moment at the top of the breath as the ball fully expands.
If the Participant is struggling with the ball, they can also use their hands to simulate the movement of the ball, expanding and contracting with their breath.
