Putty–Play

How to Do:

1. Setup:

• Gather materials: putty or Play-Doh, cookie cutters, small cups, beads, coins, and other small manipulatives (½ inch size).
• Ensure the workspace is clean and comfortable for the participant to engage in the activity.

2. Log Rolls:

• Start by rolling the putty or Play-Doh into log shapes with the participant.
• Encourage them to make different lengths and thicknesses, focusing on tactile exploration and motor skills.

3. Ball Rolling:

• Roll a large ball of putty and then pull it apart to create smaller balls.
• The participant can experiment with rolling and shaping the balls, enhancing fine motor coordination.

4. Shape Making:

• Roll a large ball of putty and flatten it with hands.
• Use cookie cutters to press into the flattened putty, creating different shapes.
• Encourage the participant to explore various shapes and discuss them (e.g., circle, star, square).

5. Bead and Coin Hunt:

• Place small cups on the table and push the putty into the cups.
• Hide 6-20 beads or coins inside the putty by pressing them down with fingers.
• The participant can dig through the putty to find the hidden items, promoting sensory exploration and problem-solving.

Tips for Success:

• Encourage the participant to describe the textures, shapes, and colors of the putty and objects.
• Offer positive reinforcement for creativity and engagement during the activity.
