How to Do:

1. Setup:

  • Ensure the participant is seated comfortably on a chair with their feet able to touch the floor.
  • Have two nubby or bumpy plastic balls ready for the activity.

2. Foot Rolling:

  • Place one nubby ball under the participant’s foot.
  • Guide the participant to roll the ball forward and back with their foot 10 times.
  • Switch to the other foot and repeat the process for 10 rolls.
  • Use both feet to roll the ball forward and back simultaneously for 10 rolls.

3. Hand Rolling:

  • Hold the nubby ball between both hands.
  • Roll the ball in a linear motion (forward and back) 10 times.
  • Then roll the ball in a circular motion 10 times in one direction and 10 times in the opposite direction.

4. Helper-Assisted Rolling:

  • The helper can gently roll the nubby ball over the participant’s back, arms, and legs to provide extra sensory input, promoting alertness and readiness.

5. Repeat the Sequence:

  • Go through the entire sequence again for added benefit and engagement.

Tips for Success:

  • Encourage slow, controlled movements for better sensory feedback.
  • Adjust the pressure and pace of rolling to the participant’s comfort level.
